So what exactly is it that makes these Sonim Phones so rugged and durable? Surely it can't be that different to other phones, it is still essentially a mobile after all, this article aims to look into the making of a Sonim Phone to discover how it earned its title of "The World's Toughest Phone", in particular we will be looking at their XP3 Quest Pro model.

There are a few different features of the Sonim phone that co-operate in order to make it so rugged. To start it off, the phone uses what's known as Gorilla Glass to create its shock and scratch resistant screen; which is all well and good but I'm sure you're wondering the same thing as I am, what is Gorilla Glass?

After some research, I found out that what makes Gorilla Glass different to the normal stuff is how it's chemically tempered. During this process, because of its composition Gorilla Glass allows larger ions to break through the surface, which in turn increases the compression tolerance and helps the glass to tolerate deeper scratches.

The phone itself is made from hardened rubber molded to an exact casing by the dual injection process. This process is similarly used when building construction machines so you know it's good! The use of this rubber casing means that the phone can with stand being run over by a car or being dropped from a height of 2 meters onto concrete.

It also features vibration protection from 5Hz to 500Hz and its non-porous casing blocks entry of micro-particles into the phone. But perhaps what are the most astonishing features of the Sonim phone are the ones I find hardest to explain; its massive operational range of  -20°C to +55°C and the fact that it is fully submersible is purely astonishing! Perhaps it's in the way they make the materials or perhaps its pure magic; but to have a phone with an operational range greater then most shown on your average thermometer and for it to be fully waterproof on top of that is quite an achievement in itself!

After my brief look into Sonim's XP3 Quest Pro, I have discovered what little things make it so rugged. It is ideal for those who need a durable mobile phone they can take anywhere, and with its ability to adapt to diverse environments it will give people who spend a lot of time outdoors the assurance they require to take their phone outside urban borders.
