- 1). Purchase the HD package from your cable or satellite provider. Without the HD package you will not be able to view HD television stations. You may also need to upgrade the receiver. Contact your provider to see if this is necessary, and if so, arrange a time when you can have the receiver installed.
- 2). Look to see if you are using HDMI cables. HDMI cables are the only available cables that are capable of transporting HD information from a receiver or BlueRay player to the RCA television. The cables can run from $20 to well over $100. If you do not use HDMI cables you will only be able to view your content in standard definition.
- 3). Check the HDMI connection. Make sure the cable is securely inserted into one of the television's HDMI ports. Also ,make sure the HDMI cable is tightly inserted into the cable receiver. If the cable is not inserted properly you will receive noise distortion (such as high pitched squeaks when loud noises occur over the television).
- 4). Adjust the aspect ratio of the television. After the HD package is purchased you will most likely need to adjust this, otherwise the image may appear stretched or squished (this is because most HD televisions are wider than the standard definition television, so the standard definition imaged tries to stretch and fill in the space). Press the "Menu" button on your cable provider's remote, then select "Options." Search through until you find "Aspect Ratio." Select this, then click the appropriate aspect ratio for your HD television (either 720 or 1080). Once this has been done the image will be displayed correctly.
