How to Compare Wrought-Iron Fences

    • 1). Compare the material from which the wrought iron is made. In many cases, you can get a wrought-iron fence that has a similar appearance to wrought iron but is made of lighter-weight, longer-lasting material such as aluminum. Determine if you want authentic wrought iron or longer-lasting metals requiring less maintenance.

    • 2). Compare the overall height of different wrought-iron fences. For example, if you need a small fence to go on top of a concrete retaining wall, you will not require the height of a wrought-iron fence used for street level fencing. The taller the fence, the more expensive it is.

    • 3). Compare new fencing to a reclaimed or reconditioned fence. New wrought-iron fences often comes in contemporary designs not found on old, vintage wrought iron. In addition, you may not have the ability to obtain a pattern commonly found on older fencing.

    • 4). Compare the fastener method. In many cases, wrought iron gets placed in wet concrete and once the concrete dries, the wrought iron fence stays in place. In other cases, wrought iron fencing has brackets welded onto the bottom that allow you to secure the fencing to a preexisting surface.

    • 5). Compare manufactured wrought iron commonly found in home improvement stores with the quality of custom fabricated wrought iron available from iron craft workers. Custom wrought iron will require a significant monetary investment, but you can have it customized to your exact needs and desires. For smaller pieces, this is a great way to add a personal touch to your home.
