- Stone dust is the smallest type of crusted stone and is usually referred to as #10 or screenings. It is normally used as a base material for pavers or bricks. Stone dust can also be used as a base material for any kind of walkway, bike path or horse arena. Stone dust works well for mixing with larger crushed stone to help it to pack and prevent the larger stones from moving. Stone dust does not work well in muddy areas because it will just become mud after being applied to it.
- This type of crushed stone is the most common type of crushed stone that is used. The diameter of the crushed pieces of stone should be 0.75 inches, although some pieces can be as big as an inch in diameter. The size can easily be described as nickel-sized to quarter-sized. #57 works well for walkways, bike paths, driveways and many other applications because of its comfort to walk and drive on. This type can also be used as a sub base for concrete sidewalks, driveways and patios.
- This type of crushed stone is basically a mixture of stone dust and #57 crushed stone. This type of crushed stone works excellent for driveways, roadways or as a base for retaining walls. The smaller stone dust will mix with the 3/4-inch stones and compact very well. It can be used to patch or fill holes in paved areas. This type of crushed stone is small enough to be worked by hand. The mixture does not work very well in muddy areas because the stone dust will turn into mud when it comes in contact with it.
- #1 is the largest type of crushed stone. They can ranges from 2.5 inches in diameter to 4 inches in diameter, or from egg-sized to softball-sized. These stones are very large and cannot be worked by hand or moved with a shovel. In order to get them packed down well, smaller stones, such as stone dust, would need to be mixed with or topdressed on the #1 stones. #1 stones can sometimes be mixed with #2 sized stones, which are normally 2.5 inches in diameter themselves.
