When your possessions threaten to overwhelm your home, organizers can bring back a sense of sanity and calm. Organizing systems can be expensive to buy, putting an unnecessary strain on your budget. Look for ways to bring organization to your home using otherwise useless items, making the most of the space in your home, and repurposing bargain items. - One of the major roadblocks to organization in your home or office is clutter. Set aside a couple of hours that are dedicated solely to going through the small items that gather on countertops, side tables, and in drawers. Throw out the things that you don't need, put others in a bag for donation, and find the rightful place for the rest. As soon as you remove the clutter from a space, it will begin to look cleaner and more organized.
- If you have old food containers that no longer have lids, use them to organize your drawers. Choose low-profile containers to keep pens, pencils, office supplies, earrings, or hair accessories separate, and use larger containers to keep a hold on wayward utensils or kitchen supplies. Plastic containers are a good way to organize beauty supplies because they prevent damage to the drawers in the case of spills.
- Door and wall space is often ignored during the organization process, but can provide valuable storage with easy access. To organize craft items, shoes, bags, accessories, toys, or office supplies, buy a cheap canvas shoe hanger with individual pockets; you can use each pocket to hold a different type of item and hang it on the inside or outside of a closet door. Add inexpensive hooks to a blank wall to turn it into organizing space for purses, necklaces, clothing, or scarves. In an office, attach simple boxes to the wall to keep your supplies in check.
- When you are faced with the dual challenge of organizing and decorating, visit a thrift store to find budget-friendly items that will take care of both purposes. You might buy a vintage trunk that can act as seating, add to the decor of the room, and organize old blankets or magazines. Place antique tins on a counter to hold large utensils, and use opaque glass vases to organize office supplies while adding a touch of old-world style to your desk. An old card catalog with the drawers removed can become a mail organizer, while antique suitcases can serve as decor and blanket storage.
