- 1). Always start by weighing your gold so that you can determine the approximate wholesale value of the precious metals in your jewelry. You will need to use a digital scale to see how many grams your gold jewelry weighs. Once you know how heavy your gold is, check the spot price of gold at the Kitco website to see what the wholesale melt value of your metal is (see Resources below). The spot price is listed by the troy ounce, so divide the amount by 31.103 to know the price per gram.
- 2). Place a classified advertisement in the local newspaper. Classified ads are usually the best method of reaching a local audience, and all newspapers have a section in their classifieds that are designated as a place to list items for sale. In addition to having a classified ad in the "Tacoma News Tribune," you should also carry an add in Seattle area newspapers, such as the "Seattle Times" and the "Seattle Post Intelligencer" (see Resources).
- 3). Rent a booth at the swap meet. The Star-Lite Swap Meet is located on the grounds of the old Star-Lite Drive-In Theater. The swap meet is visited by thousands of people who are looking for just about anything to spend their money on. You pay a few dollars to rent a booth. You supply the jewelry, and the swap meet will provide the foot traffic, increasing your chances of finding a buyer for your jewelry. Get additional information about the Star-Lite Swap Meet by calling (253) 588-8090.
- 4). Sell your gold jewelry to one of the jewelers in Tacoma. Tacoma has a large number of jewelry stores to choose from, and many of them will buy your gold with the intention of reselling it in their store. Others will offer to sell the jewelry on a consignment basis. Visit several jewelry stores before making a decision, so that you know who is willing to offer you the highest rate for your gold jewelry. A few of the main jewelry stores to visit in Tacoma are Huffs Fine Jewelry at (253) 759-7005, Le Roy Jewelers at (253) 272-3377 and Kantor Diamond Company at (253) 272-7007.
- 5). Locate a gold buyer to sell your gold jewelry to. While these businesses usually buy coins and bullion to be melted down, they will buy anything so long as it is made from gold, including your gold jewelry. Since they are mostly interested in melting your jewelry, they usually will not offer anything higher than the melt value unless they view your items as being highly collectible. For broken or damaged jewelry, these places can’t be beat. The main gold buyers in Tacoma are Grandmaster’s Coins & Precious Metals at (253) 752-7025, FPS Gold at (800) 422-3134 and King’s Gold at (253) 984-1755.
- 6). Sell your gold to one of the local pawnshops. There are many pawnshops in Tacoma, and any of them will be more than happy to buy as much gold jewelry as you want to sell. Of course, they will try to take possession of your gold while paying you as little as possible, so polish your negotiation skills and be prepared to drive a hard bargain. A few pawnbrokers to check into are the Pawn X-Change at (253) 460-1255, Hill Top Loans at (253) 627-1044, EG Pawn at (253) 383-3606 and Lincoln Pawn Broker at (253) 474-4933.
