Question: What is the Priesthood?
In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we believe in the priesthood but what does that mean? What is the priesthood?
Answer:
The priesthood is the power and authority of God, which is eternal. It is through the power of the priesthood that God's plan of salvation is brought to pass which includes the creation of all things and the salvation of mankind. God gives the priesthood to worthy male members of the Church, who are authorized to use His power to act in His name.
The priesthood authorizes these men to:
- Preach the gospel (missionary work)
- Administer the ordinances of the gospel
- Lead God's kingdom on earth (prophets and apostles)
