How to Use Gypsum on Raspberries

    • 1). Test the pH of the soil prior to adding any amendments including gypsum. This must be done up to two years before the first canes are planted. Raspberries grow and produce best in soil with a pH between 5.6 and 6.5.

    • 2). Apply 500 to 2,000 lbs. of gypsum per acre after the soil in the planting area has been tilled and prepared for new raspberry bed plantings. For established raspberry beds, a side application of 30 lbs. per acre is recommended. Using a lawn spreader is a convenient means of laying down an even layer.

    • 3). Spread gypsum evenly over the soil surface and rake lightly into the soil. Allowing it to remain close to the soil surface brings it into contact with rain or irrigation water which helps dissolve and disperse the gypsum particles. Periodic soil testing and reapplication of gypsum needs to be done every few years.
