How to Lead Music for a Christian Spiritual Retreat

    • 1). Be consistent. Music should be one of the last ingredients of the retreat planning process. Once you determine the theme and schedule for the retreat, the music should fall into place. Find music that follows the retreat's overall theme. Select songs that provide this consistency.

    • 2). Take your guests on a journey through your music. The music you select should be organized into the retreat schedule at appropriate times. Music selected at the beginning of the retreat should begin the journey and music at the end of the retreat should close the journey and prepare those attending for their return home.

    • 3). Facilitate intimacy through music. Guests are planning to attend your retreat to seek and encounter God. By providing music that brings them closer to God, they will soak in His presence and feel His grace. This type of music is especially effective during the beginning of the retreat.

    • 4). Select praise songs to end your retreat. Those in attendance will want to leave the retreat feeling full of God's grace.

    • 5). Allow space for flexibility. Form a music plan, however, don't make it concrete. Each retreat is different and requires a unique touch. Every person attending your retreat brings a sense of being and need. Allow time for reflection and additional music depending on what moves you and the group. Music isn't the focus of the retreat; it's used to enhance the experience, not dominate it.
