How to Identify Male & Female Western Pond Turtles

    • 1). Look at the color of the turtle's throat. Males have lighter colored skin on the throat than the females.

    • 2). Turn the turtle over and look at the bottom. If the tail is long, with the vent behind the edge of the top shell, it's a male. If it's short, and the edge of the shell comes before the vent, it's a female.

    • 3). Check the plastron, which is the bottom half of the shell. If it's flat, the turtle is female. If it's concave shaped, it's male.
