- 1). Put 3 inches of potting soil into a pot.
- 2). Dig up the grass, making sure to dig out as much earth as possible.
- 3). Place the grass in the pot. The pot size is determined by the size of the clump of grass being dug up. Purple ornamental grass tends to be smaller than some other types, so a 1-gallon size normally is big enough.
- 4). Trim the grass, using scissors, to 8 inches high.
- 5). Water the grass to dampen the soil. Bring it inside to keep it alive through the cold season.
- 1). Cut the grass to within an 1-1/2 inches of the ground, using scissors.
- 2). Spread mulch around the base to trap moisture and insulate the ground around the purple grass. Make the mulch at least 2 inches deep. Spread the mulch 2 feet from the grass.
- 3). Cover the grass with a plastic bag to keep any potential frost off the blades.
