The Nikon D3 is a professional-level DSLR camera. It offers the benefits of digital photography, such as instant image review, and advanced features like interchangeable lenses. This camera is designed for professional photographers who need a reliable, high-quality camera for daily use. However, due to the camera's retail price, casual consumers will prefer a lower-priced model. - This camera has a 12.1-megapixel sensor and is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Its shutter speed ranges between 1/8,000 of a second and 30 seconds and it can shoot up to 9 frames per second. Its ISO speed rating is between 100 and 6,400. It is compatible with all Nikon Nikkor series lenses, but has complete functionality only with the G- or D- AF series.
- The D3 uses CompactFlash memory card to record its media, which it displays on a 3-inch LCD screen. Its built-in flash is capable of red-eye reduction, and an external flash can be attached via the hot shoe bracket. It only has four shooting modes (all of which are semi-manual) and is capable of a Live View mode. It has a USB port for transferring images to a computer and an HDMI port for displaying images on an HDTV.
- As of 2010, the D3 can be purchased new for $4,000 and used for around $3,500. This camera will need to be purchased at photography specialty stores or from public sale listings. Larger electronics retailer may carry this model, but will most likely carry more affordable, consumer-focused models.
