- 1). Cut the foliage back to ground level in the fall once the frost kills it. Daisies are cold hardy and may linger well into the fall before succumbing to cold weather.
- 2). Remove all plant debris from the area and discard it in the compost bin. Rake gently to remove dead foliage or fallen leaves.
- 3). Mulch the plants with 2 to 3 inches of hay, straw or leaves to protect young roots from the ravages of winter storms and freezing soil. This prevents damage to roots as the soil freezes and thaws.
- 4). Remove the mulch in early spring, once the soil has thawed and the snow and ice has melted. Use care not to damage new shoots.
- 5). Apply low-nitrogen fertilizer in the spring when new growth appears. Follow the recommended application rate on the container. Perennials do not require heavy fertilizing, but they benefit from a boost of nutrients in the spring.
