"Underworld Evolution" Special Edition DVD Review

About.com Rating

The Bottom Line

The special effects are better in this sequel, the fight scenes are more intense, but the story itself isn't all that compelling. With all those werewolves and vampires running around killing people and each other, there's no need to complicate the affair by going overboard with the backstory and auxiliary characters.

    • The story's more confusing than it needs to be to sell this sequel

Guide Review - "Underworld Evolution" Special Edition DVD Review

Kate Beckinsale's back in tight black leather for this sequel to the hit horror film, "Underworld." Beckinsale and her director husband Len Wiseman reunite for "Underworld Evolution," a film that delves into the origin of vampires and werewolves and reveals what happened to Selene's family.

Scott Speedman also returns as the super-strong hybrid mix with special healing powers.

"Underworld Evolution" starts out with a furious battle scene set hundreds of years in the past. Werewolves have slaughtered a village and vampires are left to kill off the dead as they transform into lycans. From the beginnings of their ancient feud, "Underworld Evolution" fast-forwards to modern times and Selene's betrayal by her fellow Death Dealers. She and Michael (Speedman) are now pretty much the only ones left with the strength and abilities to end the war between the vampires and werewolves.

    DVD Bonus Features

The behind the scenes featurettes are divided up to allow each to focus on a particular area of production. Everything from set design to fight choreography is covered in the entertaining featurettes. The commentary track by director Len Wiseman and others involved in the film is about average but does offer a little more insight into how each scene was brought to the screen.
