- 1). Prepare the food basket. Fill a woven basket with filler, such as colorful shredded paper or plastic grass, which will help cushion the food items.
- 2). Choose food items to fill the basket. Pick prepackaged and nonperishable items, such as gourmet coffee, soup mixes, cookies, candy, crackers, dehydrated fruits, nuts and jarred sauce, to prevent the threat of food-borne illness. Avoid sending items that can melt, such as chocolate, during warm summer months.
- 3). Arrange the food items in the basket, making sure to place delicate items, such as potato chips and cookies, on top.
- 4). Wrap the packed basket tightly with plastic wrap to secure all of the food items inside. Place the wrapped basket in a sturdy cardboard box. Surround the basket with packing peanuts or bubble wrap.
- 5). Close the box and secure it with packing tape. Address the box to the recipient and write "handle with care" on the top. Ship the package via overnight or 2-day mail through the United States Postal Service.
