About the Shiva Candle

    Significance

    • The shiva candle is lit in memory of the deceased. It compares the departed's life and soul to a flame, and visually expresses how a person can light many candles from a single flame yet not reduce the flame's size. It is believed that the lit candle aids the soul on its journey heavenward.

    Sitting Shiva

    • Only immediate family members over the age of 13 sit shiva, but friends and other relatives can visit the shiva house during this time. If immediate family members must return to their own homes, another candle may be lit at their homes to commemorate shiva. The focus shifts from honoring the dead to the intense grief of those family members left behind.

    The Shiva Candle

    • The shiva candle is lit immediately upon returning to the home from the burial, and stays lit 24 hours a day for seven days. A special Jewish prayer is recited prior to lighting the candle, which is symbolic of the departed soul. The prayer is recited to bring the light of God back into the home and the lighting of the candle signifies that the soul can never be extinguished.

    Other Aspects of Shiva

    • A pitcher of water is placed outside the door of the home where people are sitting shiva for the ritualistic hand washing that must be done after coming into contact with death. People sitting shiva are required to sit low to the ground, sometimes even on the floor, to signify loneliness. All mirrors in the house are covered, in order to focus more on the grief. There is no wearing of shoes, perfumes or makeup, no haircuts or nail trimming for 30 days and no wearing of freshly laundered garments.
