Railway sleepers were manufactured long time ago with the main purpose as attachment in the railway tracks. Naturally, there will come a point that they will suffer from wear and tear and they need to be changed. The reused sleepers still serve its purpose not as sleepers but for other purposes mainly to accessorize the garden and as decorative items.
Railway sleepers are made from different kinds of materials such as wood, concrete, steel and composite plastic. They are recycled in such a way that they can be useful and landscapers and garden designers find them very functional in the garden. The original materials for sleepers were made from stones but they found this to be unsuitable especially on soft grounds. This paved the way in utilizing timbers. Concrete, steel and plastic were used as materials in making sleeper.
The numbers of reclaimed sleepers give way to the creative minds on ways that the sleeper will be used to the fullest. Landscapers and garden sleepers begin using them for soil retention, raised garden beds, pavements in the pathway and driveways and steps. They even use the sleepers in building sheds and garages. Its versatility offers different options for the landscapers.
Recycled sleepers were also made as children's playground wherein one can alter the rustic color to colorful ones. They also discover that they are great in making ponds in the garden. Sleepers are great materials in making tables and benches in the garden area which make a good place for family gathering. It's unique and rustic appearance blends well with the surrounding. Gardeners use sleepers in containing the artificial grass other people put in their garden. Others will put the sleepers on top of the soil so that they will be able to stop the constant growing of the weeds in the garden.
Railway sleepers begin to be a popular choice among the landscapers for they are lighter to carry and they offer ease in transporting from one place to another. In order to preserve the sleepers so that it will last long, gardeners would put this on top of the gravel beds. The life of the sleepers would depend entirely on the kind of materials used and the amount of moisture they are often exposed. Once the sleepers are exposed to the moisture more often, there is no other way for you but to change them more often.
