How to Appraise a Stamp Collection

    Appraising Your Stamp Collection

    • 1). Collect your stamp albums and any purchase receipts and certificates of authenticity.

    • 2). Purchase a Scott Stamp Catalog, considered the industry standard for pricing stamps of all varieties, and grab an ink pen and some notebook paper.

    • 3). Read the catalog's section explaining stamp values.

    • 4). Using the catalog, find the value of each stamp. Consider the condition of each stamp and adjust its value accordingly.

    • 5). In the notebook, record the value of each stamp. Make special note of stamps worth more than $250 and mint stamp sets.

    • 6). Add up the values to establish the total retail value of your collection.

    • 7). If you believe you own a valuable collection, seek a second opinion by contacting Michael DuBasso, the chief appraiser at The American Philatelic Foundation. You can reach DuBasso at (310) 275-3256.

DuBasso offers free appraisals on some collections. If he agrees to appraise your collection, mail your stamp collection via UPS or registered insured mail to:
