- 1). Dig six holes with the post hole digger. The holes should be 18 inches deep and 12 inches in diameter. Since each hole will hold one post of the swing set, you should map out where you want the holes to go before you start digging. Holes should be dug in pairs of two and the pairs should be spaced six feet apart vertically. There should be 20 feet horizontally between the first two pairs of post holes, and 15 feet horizontally between the middle two post holes and the last two post holes.
- 2). Carve notches near the top of each post with the circular saw. These notches will eventually hold the 4-inch by 6-inch post, which will end up being the top crossbar of the swing set. These notches should be 4 1/4 inches wide. To get the best cut from the circular saw, cut at a 45 degree angle. Make sure each notch is carved at the same height on each post, and is no farther than six inches from the top.
- 3). Measure and cut six cross brace pieces from the last 4-inch by 4-inch post. Touch two posts together at an angle and measure the width between the posts at five inches and nine inches below the apex. Cut the braces to these measurements. Each pair of posts will have two cross braces attached at these spots. Nail the cross braces in between each of the three pairs of posts to connect them. This will create the A frames of the swing set.
- 4). Sand and smooth the wood on the swing set frame with the power sander. Drill holes in the 4-inch by 6-inch post where you want the swing set hooks to go.
- 5). Place the posts in the post holes. Secure the posts together with the swing set brackets. Bolt the brackets in place with a socket wrench. Run the 4-inch by 6-inch post horizontally through the carved notches and secure it in place with bolts. Fill each of the holes 3/4 full with concrete mix, then fill up the remaining 1/4 with water. The concrete will take 24 hours to harden.
- 6). Drill holes through each post into the cross braces, and fasten screws into these holes to anchor the swing set. Screw the swing hooks into the holes made in the 4-inch by 6-inch post, then attach the swings.
