- 1). Get the VIN. The vehicle identification number is the most important information used to identify and track a car's history. The VIN is usually located on a thin metal plate near the windshield on the driver's side.
- 2). Order a vehicle-history report. With the VIN, you can trace the vehicle's history through several online car-history databases and order a report on the car's history. See the Resources section below for links to a few of these sites.
- 3). Pay the fee. Some car-history sites are free, but the most respected sites will charge a fee to obtain the car-history report. One, for example, charges about $30 for a single report but offers a significant discount when ordering multiple reports.
