- The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there were about 21,370 statisticians employed in 2009. These workers earned an average of about $36.16 an hour or about $75,220 per year. Statisticians in the top 10th percentile of earners made an average of $56.35 per hour or about $117,210 per year, while those in the lowest 10th percentile made about $18.48 per hour or $38,430 per year.
- The "federal executive branch" employed the highest number of statisticians in 2009. The estimated 4,290 statisticians in this sector earned an average of $44.50 per hour or about $92,570 per year. The sector with the next-highest number of statisticians employed was the "scientific research and development services," where the estimated 3,030 statisticians earned an average of about $42.01 per hour or about $87,380 per hour.
- The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that statisticians employed in the "medical equipment and supplies manufacturing" had the highest averages out of all sectors in 2009. These statisticians made an average hourly wage of about $46.22 or about $96,140 per year. Statisticians in the second-highest paying sector, "educational and support services," earned an average of about $45.34 per hour or about $94,310 per year.
- The District of Columbia, West Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and Minnesota were the five states with the highest average wages for statisticians as of 2009. Statisticians employed in the District of Columbia had the highest overall wages, earning an average of $49.43 per hour or about $102,820 per year. Those in the fifth-highest paying state, Minnesota, earned about $43.21 an hour or about $89,880 per year.
