- 1). Keep it clean. Many types of bugs are attracted to dirty spaces. Make sure the kitchen counters and floor are free of crumbs, wash dirty dishes immediately and wipe surfaces down frequently with a disinfecting cleaner.
- 2). Store food in airtight containers. Bugs can make their way into any container that's left open, such as cereal boxes, so it's important that all food in the pantry is sealed properly.
- 3). Seal holes. Spiders, ants and other bugs can make their way into a home through improperly sealed windows and doors. Add caulk around windows if necessary and replace any worn seals around exterior doors.
- 4). Spray with insecticide. Once a home has been infested by bugs, it can be very difficult to get rid of them through cleaning alone. Purchase an insecticide that is safe for indoor use -- it will specify on the label -- and spray it in cabinets, closets and other spaces, following the manufacturer's directions. Take safety precautions to keep pets and children away from the toxic spray and fumes.
- 5). Invest in pest-control traps, such as sticky traps or baits. Place these traps around the problem area to capture any bugs that may escape the insecticide or that come in later.
- 6). Contact an exterminator if the problem doesn't go away. Some pest problems are just too big for the average person to handle. If the above steps don't remedy your bug problem, invest in a professional to fix the problem once and for all.
