Regulations Governing Wind Towers

    Local Codes

    • All wind towers are subject to state regulations which will vary from area to area. The American Wind Energy Association is compiling a reference of all local wind energy codes to make it easier for builders to comply.

    Construction

    • Federal regulations require that private or public utility companies allow wind energy systems to be synchronized with their grid according to the "Energy Bible." Because of this, wiring and construction must be completed up to state code. The power must match the frequency, voltage and power quality of the utility company.

    Emergency Shut Off

    • Employees of the local energy supplier need to be protected. All wind towers attached to the utilities electrical grid must be rigged with a device forcing them to shut off in the event of a power outage. This way, no one is in danger of electrocution when working on the lines.
