- 1). Determine the size of the bookmark. If you have precut bookmarks, count the number of holes across and down the bookmark. If you have a sheet of plastic canvas, cut the canvas to the desired size with scissors and then count the holes.
- 2). Draw an outline of your bookmark on your graph paper, using one square of each hole in the bookmark.
- 3). Design your bookmark by drawing your stitches onto your graph paper using different colored pencils to represent the colors of your yarn.
- 1). Cut a piece of yarn in the first color that you will be working with and thread it through the eye of the needle.
- 2). Begin stitching your pattern by bringing your needle through the first hole, leaving 2 inches of yarn loose in the back of the bookmark. As you stitch, use your stitches to secure the loose yarn to the back of the bookmark.
- 3). Continue stitching, according to your pattern, until you are finished with either the piece of yarn or the color of yarn. After your last stitch, thread 2 inches of yarn through the stitches on the back of your bookmark to secure the stitches and cut off any excess yarn.
- 4). Repeat Steps 1-3 with the appropriate yarn colors until the pattern is complete.
- 1). Select a color of yarn for your border and thread a piece of the yarn onto your needle.
- 2). Start at the top of the bookmark; put your needle through one of the corner holes, leaving 2 inches of yarn behind.
- 3). Wrap the yarn around the outside edge of the bookmark and put your needle through the next hole, wrapping your loose yarn in the stitches.
- 4). Repeat Step 3 until you have wrapped the entire edge of the bookmark in yarn.
- 5). Use your needle to pass your remaining yarn under the backs of your stitches to secure it and cut any remaining yarn from your project.
