How to Rub Wood to Make a Fire

    • 1). Make a drill stick out of hardwood. Sharpen the point of the drill stick. The drill stick should be at least a foot long.

    • 2). Make a bow out of a piece of hardwood and a length of strong string, rope or twine. Make sure there is enough slack in the string to make a loop to go over the drill stick, and make sure the wood used for the bow is strong enough to hold tension.

    • 3). Prepare the flat wood base by cutting a V on the edge in the center. At the point of the V, dig out a small hole to use as a rest for the drill stick.

    • 4). Use a piece of wood or a flat rock for the bearing block. The bearing block will protect your hand when you apply downward force to the drill stick to increase friction.

    • 5). Place the flat wood base on the ground and stand or kneel on it to keep it steady. Place dry tinder at the opening of the V-shaped notch to catch hot ash.

    • 6). Wrap a loop of the bow string around the drill stick. Place the bearing block on the top of the drill stick and apply downward pressure.

    • 7). Spin the drill stick by using a sawing motion. The spinning of the stick creates friction at the point which generates heat. The result will be smoke and hot ash that falls onto the dry tinder creating fire.
