- Make a cake that is shaped like a flag used by the color guard member. Most color guard flags are triangular, so use a rectangular cake and cut its two longest sides diagonally to create a triangle. Frost the cake using frosting the same color as the cake and pipe on any design included on the flag. Insert a wooden dowel into the cake to serve as the flag's handle.
- Members of a color guard typically perform with a school's marching band. Create a cake that is inspired by the school. For example, decorate the cake using frosting in the school's colors and pipe a message onto the cake, such as "Go Panthers!" You could also pipe a picture of the school's mascot or logo, if you are artistically inclined.
- Find a clip-art picture of a color guard member holding a flag online. Blow the picture up to a size that is large enough to cover most of the top of the cake, then cut the figure out. Frost your cake in a color of your choice. Place the color guard picture lightly on top of the cake. Using a pastry bag, pipe the outline of the picture onto the cake. Use different colors of frosting and your pastry bag to pipe on the details of the color guard member's uniform and flag.
- Rather than making a large, traditional cake, make a batch of cupcakes instead. Bake your cupcakes and frost them in one or both of the school's colors. Use construction paper and toothpicks to make flags that resemble color guard flags. Cut out the construction paper and glue it to a toothpick. Insert a toothpick flag into the top of each cupcake for a special treat designed for your color guard team member.
