- 1). Order your credit report online. Credit bureaus require you to have a current copy of your report in order to initiate a dispute. You can obtain a free credit report once a year from each bureau by visiting the Annual Credit Report website.
- 2). Print the credit report and review it for inaccuracies. Ensure that the child support listing remains on the report. Bureaus update information often so data may have changed.
- 3). File a dispute on the credit bureau's website. You can use the online form to indicate the child support item you're disputing. You will also have to specify your reason for the dispute. You will need to file separate dispute with each of the bureaus since data may vary among them.
- 4). Give the bureaus up to 30 days to respond. The Fair Credit Reporting Act allows bureaus this much time to complete their investigation. Bureaus are required to provide you written results of the investigation. Such results for online disputes are sent to you via email and will also include a revised copy of the credit report that reflects all changes made.
- 5). Contact the reporter of the child support information if the investigation results are not to your satisfaction. Since bureaus can only verify data, any errors contained within the database of the information provider must be corrected at that source.
