- 1). Open your iTunes software and select the file you want to create a ringtone out of from your "Library." Click on this file.
- 2). Select "iTunes > "Edit" > "Preferences" from the application menu and click "Import Settings." Set "Import Using" to "AAC Encoder" and click "OK." Click "OK" once more to close down the "Preferences" dialog box.
- 3). Select "Advanced" > "Create AAC Version" to convert your .mp3 file to .m4a. This is the first required conversion on the path to creating a ringtone file.
- 4). Click on the converted file in your library and select "File" > "Show in Windows Explorer" to display the file with its extension.
- 5). Right-click, select "Rename" and change the ".m4a" extension to ".m4r." ITunes will now recognize the file as a ringtone and you can add it to your iPhone's "Ringtones" icon when connected to your computer.
