Warrior Dash Explained

About.com Rating

Warrior Dash is known as one of the "Big Three" in the sport of OCR. It has been around since 2009 and is one of the original obstacle races in the United States. The Warrior Dash is known for it's 5K course distance and many find the post race celebrations as thrilling as the event itself. Many times the Warrior Dash will enter into a geographic location much sooner than the other "Big Three". They have coined themselves the "worlds largest obstacle race series".

Warrior Dash is owned by Red Frog Events and are known to mix in fun in all their events. The Warrior Dash is no exception. The Warrior Dash offers one distance for all of it's races - the 5K. In 2013, the company tried a few variations and went back to their original model after one year. The Warrior Dash is the perfect entry level race for those looking to get into the world of obstacle racing and mud runs.

Until the beginning of 2014 all participants were given timing chips and results were posted and awards for both age group and overall were given out at the end of the day. In 2014, Warrior Dash changed their model a little bit offering one competitive or elite heat in the morning and the rest of the heats are now untimed. This makes the event an interesting hybrid of a race and a mud run. However, from the beginning the focus has always been on fun and the experience over a finishing time. There is no penalty for a skipped of failed obstacle at the Warrior Dash. This makes it very appealing to the beginner just getting into the sport.

In 2014 the Warrior Dash will have a championship to finish off the American series with a huge cash prize of $30,000 to the winning racer in October. Participants who want to qualify for this event must qualify from a early elite heat at another race. Top finishers will gain entry into the race for a chance at the sports largest single race cash prize. The top three male and top three female finishers from a regular season race receive a free entry to the World Championship.

For the majority of participants it is not money or a finish time that motivates them. The majority of people are there for fun and a little adventure. The now iconic fuzzy Viking hats are given out to each participant as well as a t-shirt. Upon completion of the race each participant receives a medal that also doubles as a bottle opener. For those of legal drinking age a free beer is given provided by sponsor Shock Top. The Warrior Dash prides itself on it's post party festival. A large stage with music all day sets the tone for the race. Participants can pick up a full turkey leg and really feel like a warrior post race. Normally other activities are available for people of all ages to participant in throughout the day. Spectators are allowed to come watch all the activity free of change.

In order to participate in a Warrior Dash the minimum age for participants is 14 years old. Teams are also encouraged at the Warrior Dash. Warrior Dash now considers itself a self-timed event, so bring your watch! Overall, Warrior Dash is the perfect way to get into the sport of OCR in a friendly and non-intimidating way. It is the perfect distance and the obstacles can be completely by most participants without assistance.
