Before you begin construction of the walls and roof of the shed, you must have a good idea of how you are going to build the shed frame.
The most common methods used for framing a shed are the stick-built technique and the post-frame method.
If you go with the post-frame method, you will not need to build a foundation for the shed.
In this method, huge posts are driven and fastened into the land using anchors.
The wall framing is done by placing beams horizontally.
You can either leave the ground as is or cover it with concrete or gravel as per your need.
If you plan on using a concrete floor then pouring the concrete and holding it in place will be easy as the surrounding frame will provide support as the concrete dries.
Many shed blueprints and shed kits also use the stick build method.
In this method 2 x 4 wooden boards are nailed to each other beginning with the sill plate which will then be connected to the foundation.
Lay down the boards which will mark the exterior wall of the shed.
Make sure you carefully measure every plank before you cut it.
Mark the sill plate at distances of 18".
You will be putting the studs which will secure the wall at these positions.
Next, nail the studs into place and finally nail down the top sill into place taking care that the wall is plumb.
Nail the plywood sheeting to the wall frame and repeat this process with each wall making sure that you leave proper spaces for the doors and windows.
Lift the two walls into position and fasten them to each other using nails or screws.
Once the walls and floor are finished, you can move on to constructing the roof.
Framing the roof will need some experience at woodworking.
Measurements and cuts need to be very precise and the roof needs to be perfectly level and square.
There are many different methods and styles for constructing the roof.
The most common ones are gambrel, gable and saltbox.
They are constructed with ridge beams attached with rafters.
You could also build them on the ground and lift the frame into place later.
Most people choose the gable roof for building sheds because it allows for more space inside the shed.
If you are new to woodworking it may be better if you purchase pre-constructed roof trusses and use it for your shed, so that you can avoid the hassle of building the roof on your own.
Once the trusses are available you should measure their position on the top beam of each wall and space them out evenly.
Fasten each truss with nails or screws making sure they are perfectly level and aligned.
After they are secured in position, you can start laying the plywood sheeting for forming the base on which the shingles will be connected.
Beginning at the lower corner, ensure that every sheet is aligned properly and is plumb.
Next, add the shingles and felt paper.
Now you can finish installing the windows and doors.
It is important to use quality building materials for constructing the shed framing.
This will ensure that you shed lasts many years with very little maintenance.
