How to Partition an External Hard Drive Without Erasing It

    • 1). Attach the external hard drive to your computer via USB or eSATA.

    • 2). Press and hold the "Windows" key on the keyboard and press the "R" key. Type "diskmgmt.msc" in the "Open" text box. Click "OK."

    • 3). Right-click the external drive in the list of volumes. Select "Shrink Volume" from the context menu.

    • 4). Enter the amount of space to shrink the existing partition in the "Enter the Amount of Space to Shrink in MB" text box. The maximum amount of space will be in the text box, but you can enter any amount up to the maximum. Click "Shrink."

    • 5). Scroll to the physical drive in the bottom window and right-click the unallocated space. Click "New Simple Volume."

    • 6). Click "Next" in the New Simple Volume Wizard. Click "Next" to add all unallocated space to the new partition. Select a drive letter for the new partition from the "Assign the Following Drive Letter" drop-down menu. Click "Next."

    • 7). Click the "Format" radio button and choose the file system and allocation unit size from the drop-down menus. Enter a volume label for the new drive in the "Volume Label" text box. Click "Next." Click "Finish."
