If you have a modern home, most likely one of the items you are going to have in that home is a glass top table.
After all, glass is one of the materials that are most often used in modern décor.
Combine it with metal and you have a perfect piece that fits anything from an industrial room to a crisp contemporary design.
But, before you purchase that glass table and bring it into your home there are a few things you need to think about.
If you are not taking good care of it and keeping it on a regular maintenance schedule very soon it may go from being a table you love to look at all the time to one you wish wasn't there because you hate how marred the surface has become.
The first thing you need to do is consider the room where the glass top table is going to be as well as the people who will be using that room.
If you have a family that is very active and uses things very hard you are going to need to take extra steps to protect that glass table.
The first thing you can do is make sure there are thing beneath anything set on the glass table.
For example, a doily under a lamp, a coaster under a glass, perhaps even a runner that goes across the table that gives everyone a place to set things down without impacting the glass table top.
The next thing you need to do is try to keep it out of the immediate danger zone of the room.
What this means is that you want to make sure it is not something that people are going to run into, drop things on, etc all of the time as those are ways to quickly break your glass table and quickly find yourself without that pieces of furniture you love.
The next thing you need to do is set up a maintenance schedule for your glass top table.
A maintenance schedule includes a number of things.
First and foremost you need to dust.
You are going to need to dust your glass table at least once a week, more if you have a lot of dust that seems to build up in your house.
While you may not realize it, it is very easy for dust to gather on a glass top table and inside that dust are particles of dirt that can actually scratch the surface of the table if they are rubbed into the surface.
So, it's much easier to just get rid of the dust in the first place and not cause that threat.
Next is to keep the table clean.
In addition to dust, dirt, grime and other things can easily get on the table.
It could be a couple drops of soda or wine out of a glass that have created a sticky surface.
It could have been grimy hands.
There are a number of things that can cause dirt streaks and marks on your glass top table.
No matter what has caused it you want to get this off of your table before it does any damage.
Remember things like dirt can be pushed into the surface of the table and cause it to scratch and that soda or wine can be a great magnet to pull the dirt and dust into a muddy mess.
Try using a rag with warm soapy water on it to remove anything that is sticking to the tabletop surface and really clean it off.
Then use a dry cloth to completely dry the surface and make sure the table looks as new as you want it to.
Finally you may want to use a little glass cleaner to wrap things up as this really makes your table shine like new and removes any other dust or small particles that may be sitting behind.
Make sure you keep with this maintenance schedule at least once a week, more often if there is a lot of activity, dust or dirt in your home, to keep those glass top tables looking like new for years to come.
