Probably the most crucial piece of furniture you buy for your home is the dining room table.
Other than your bed and your couch, most people spend their time at the dining room table, or in the case of guests, observing it.
The problem is most people do not put a lot of thought into what kind of table to buy.
It's not that a homeowner is always aloof to the issue; many times they simply cannot afford the table that they want.
This is understandable in that a high quality oak table, for example, can easily command upwards of two thousand dollars or more.
If money is an object (and let's face it, for many it is) then you have to take into consideration many different factors when choosing a dining room table.
We have already covered cost; buy what you can afford.
But let's talk about room size.
It is beneficial to the homeowner to take into account the size and shape of the dining room when considering purchasing a dining room table.
For example, is the room small to the point where a single or no-leaf table would be the most beneficial? Or do you have enough room to add a rectangular or oval multileaf table? What about the shape of the room? Luckily most dining rooms are either square or round shaped.
If you have a square room, you should look into purchasing a square table.
If you have a round room, then a round table is the best fit to flush out the rooms' essence.
As mentioned earlier the size of the room is important.
The homeowner does not want to purchase a table too small, as it could make the room look empty.
Too big of a table will make the room look small.
Also make sure that enough room is left over in case accessories are to be added, like a buffet or hutch.
The shape and size of the room will also determine how many chairs will be needed for the dining room table.
Typically, a homeowner will keep as many chairs as they feel will potentially be needed around the dining room table at all times.
This can have a negative effect of cramping space that could otherwise be utilized for better traffic and chair placement.
If the homeowner typically has four people at the table every night, then only leave four tables at the table for display.
Extra chairs can be kept in storage areas until needed.
This leaves the area surrounding the table more open an inviting.
What about the different kinds of tables which are available? There are different shapes and size, of course, but generally dining room tables' fall into two categories; round and square.
As mentioned earlier, a square table should accompany a square room, and a round table for a round room.
The material the table is made from must also be chosen with care.
There are several materials to choose from including various woods, ceramic, wicker, metal, and glass-topped.
The kind of material a homeowner chooses will depend largely on their personal tastes, but room décor issues such as lighting, color, and flooring must be taken into consideration when deciding on the type of table to be purchased.
The homeowner shouldn't worry so much about durability other than if the product is well made and what kind of warranty, if any, is offered.
They should concentrate on what they like.
Taking all of these factors into consideration, a homeowner should be able to find the right table at the right price that will make them happy for years to come.
It is a big decision, but one that can be very satisfying with the right amount of research and shopping.
