Ohiopyle State Park

Gateway to the Laurel Mountains, Ohiopyle State Park encompasses over 19,000 acres of rugged national beauty in southwestern Pennsylvania. The focal point of Ohiopyle is the more than 14 miles of the Youghiogheny River George which provides some of the best whitewater boating in the Eastern U.S. Hiking and biking trails, waterfalls, natural waterslides, and a state park natural area round out the gorgeous package.

Location / Directions:

Ohiopyle State Park is located outside of Farmington, PA, off of route PA 381 and SR2010.

Admission & Fees:

Entrance to Ohiopyle State Park is free, although some activities such as boat rentals, guided whitewater rafting, etc. will entail their own fees.

What to Expect:

In the center of Ohiopyle State Park, the Ohiopyle Falls Day Use Area is the central point for many visitors, with parking, restrooms, a gift shop and several overlook platforms. Within other areas of the park there are rugged trails for hiking and mountain biking and crushed limestone trails for walking, biking and cross-country skiing. Ohiopyle also has several waterfalls, two natural waterslides, two picnic areas, horseback riding, camping, fishing, hunting and, of course, whitewater boating.

Whitewater Rafting at Ohiopyle:

The Youghiogheny River, known locally as "The Yough" (pronounced Yawk), is one of the most popular whitewater destinations in the Eastern US. Churning with Class 1 to Class 5 rapids, the river provides opportunities for rafters and kayakers of all levels.

Several outfitters organize tours out of Ohiopyle State Park, as well as rentals. Rafting is best in the springtime, although fun during summer and fall as well.

Trails:

Twenty-seven miles of the Youghiogheny River Trail run through Ohiopyle State Park, excellent for walking, hiking, biking and cross country skiing.
