- 1). Make sure the plate is perfectly clean by wiping it with a damp cloth. You should not immerse unglazed ceramics in water for any length of time. Leave it to dry before starting to paint it.
- 2). Cover a table with newspaper to prevent too much mess and place the plate face up on to it.
- 3). Transfer the ceramic paints onto the palette being sure to leave enough room between the different colors that they do not run into each other. For very small children sticking to two or three different colors can stop them blending to an unattractive brown on the plate.
- 4). Give the children the brushes and allow them to paint whatever designs they wish on the plate. If they are struggling with the brushes, give them ceramic pens which will be less messy. These pens are also good if children wish to write their own names on the plates.
- 5). Bake the plates in the oven once the children have finished their designs. Refer to paint and plate manufacturers' instructions for correct timings and temperatures.
