8 Saving Tips For the Holiday Cook

[1] If you are buying the breast of the turkey for Thanksgiving, get one with the bone still in it.
It will be cheaper in the beginning and you can use the bones for making broth for a great soup using the left over turkey.
[2] Start saving the heels and crust from bread several weeks ahead to make your dressing.
Lightly toast it, do not add butter, then crumble into small pieces and store in the freezer until needed.
[3] Save your butter wrappers and use them to coat the insides of your cooking pots or cake pans.
It will add a little more flavor to your cooking for no extra cost.
[4] If you are having a large group for dinner, make a punch or flavored tea to cut down the cost of drinks.
[5] The price of nuts usually go down during the holiday baking season.
If you use those items through out the year, buy extra to have on hand.
What you do not use in 2 months should be put in the freezer for safe keeping.
Freeze them in measured amount for easier use, later.
[6] Buy the size of turkey you will need.
Buying a 22 pound turkey when you only need a 12 pound turkey will lead to the waste of food and your money.
[7] Use coupons for more savings at the grocery stores.
Check online, in newspapers and at the stores' web site to get the best deals.
Make your weekly menus and shopping list before going to the store.
Then stick to the list to keep on your budget.
[8] The oldest holiday savings is the pot luck dinner.
Ask everyone to bring something but do it with a plan, so you do not end up with 7 cranberry sauces and no mashed potatoes.
After you have made the menu, call the guest with a list of what you would like them to bring.
Remember to keep a smile on your face when Great Aunt Hattie insists on bringing her casserole and you want her to bring a simple green salad.
Tell her to bring both.
