What to Do About Heartburn?

    Medications for Heartburn

    • Antacids such as Maalox, Rolaids and Tums provide relief during the onset stage of heartburn. However, if you have symptoms of heartburn often, consider taking an H-2 receptor blocker, such as Pepcid AC, Zantac 75 or Nizatidine (which is preventative). Although these medications take longer to work, they'll give you relief for a longer time.

Also, talk with your doctor about Proton Pump Inhibitors for chronic heart burn. These medications control stomach acids and help heal the tissues in the esophagus, which can be damaged by chronic heartburn. Medications such as Prilosect and Prevacid are available over the counter, without a prescription.

    Lifestyle Changes

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, there are many natural methods for controlling heartburn, such as maintaining a healthy weight, eating small meals, and waiting three hours after eating before lying down.

Since diet plays a large role in heartburn, avoid acidic foods, such as tomato and citrus. Alcohol, coffee and garlicky foods are also heartburn triggers.

    Alternative Options

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, stress can aggravate heartburn. Alternative therapies, such as aromatherapy, exercise, massage and guided meditations, may minimize heartburn.

    When to Call a Doctor

    • If your heartburn stops responding to over-the-counter medications such as antacids or Prilosect, call your doctor. This is a symptom of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), which may require a prescription from your doctor, or surgery in more serious cases.
