Most food historians agree that the Caesar Salad was created by Caesar Cardini. Others who claim to be the salad's creator include Giacomo Junia, Paul Maggiora and Livio Santini. - Cardini's salad was invented in 1924 at his restaurant, Caesar's Place, in Tijuana, Mexico. Cardini opened his restaurant in Tijuana to avoid America's prohibition laws.
- According to culinary lore, the salad was invented when a busy 4th of July weekend caused Cardini to run low on ingredients. He tossed whatever ingredients his kitchen had left into a salad. The impromptu salad would become the world-famous Caesar salad.
- The original ingredients of Cardini's Caesar salad included olive oil, Worcestershire sauce, Parmesan cheese, eggs and romaine lettuce. Anchovies were not added until later in the salad's history.
- Thanks largely to the salad's fame, Cardini opened a restaurant in Los Angeles in 1938. A salad dressing company followed in 1948. Today the salad is found in restaurants across the world.
