The Family That Camps Together...
When you send the kids off to summer camp, after that initial burst of elation, don't you feel, well... just a bit... jealous?! You're never too old to long for days filled with ping pong tournaments, sailing lessons, rainy day Bingo games, hayrides, lip synching, and bonfires.
At Point Sebago Resort, a 775-acre family playground in Casco, Maine, adults can not only participate in summer camp activities usually relegated to the younger set, they can also enjoy adult-oriented recreational facilities including a picturesque, 18-hole Championship golf course; a driving range; a marina; tennis courts; and a nightclub.
A family vacation at Point Sebago Resort won't cramp kids' style, either. In fact, the menu of free, counselor-led programs for tots to teenagers would rival that found at any summer camp designed exclusively for children. From crafts to sports to games to dances, activities begin early in the morning and continue on into the evening hours.
Many of the organized activities are designed for all ages, too, so it's easy to create a customized day that mixes family fun with time for adults to scamper off alone and for kids to interact with new friends. Don't forget to save time for a competitive round of family miniature golf and a dip in the lake before supper.
Point Sebago Resort offers a variety of accommodations options catering to the full spectrum of vacationers, from those who enjoy roughing it to families that demand a few more creature comforts in a home away from home. Choose a tent or RV site, or opt to stay in one of the resort's rental trailers, park homes, or resort cottages, which offer varying levels of comfort and amenities.
At the top of the line, resort cottages offer one to three bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, all linens, and a sunroom or deck. Enjoy meals together in the dining hall or within your rental unit, or, if the offspring are old enough to tackle the buffet alone, adults can retreat to the Terrace Room for quieter dining.
Once the summer season is in full swing, a full week's stay is required. More flexibility is available in the late spring, early summer and fall. In fact, you can take advantage of a number of themed family weekends in the off-season if you're looking for a quick, affordable, all-inclusive family getaway and a taste of the resort's unique combination of offerings. While activity schedules aren't quite as jam-packed as during the summer season, I'll vouch for the fact that you won't find a shortage of heart-pumping adventure. Heck--I got chased by pirates when I visited Point Sebago Resort!
The Pirates of Sebago Family Weekend takes place each June and is one of the resort's most popular theme weekends. It features pirate cruises on Sebago Lake aboard the facility's own Sebago Princess double-decker boat, treasure hunts, a pirate costume contest and even a lobster dinner.
Golf vacation packages of varying durations depending on the season are available, too, and special golf rates are always extended to resort guests.
Much like a family campground, Point Sebago Resort also has an arcade and its own camp store, where prices are surprisingly reasonable considering the captive audience. Grab coffee and pastries in the a.m., or pick up a block of cheese and some crackers to savor after the kids are tucked into bed.
You may just find that you join the ranks of "happy campers" who book their Point Sebago stay for the following year as they're checking out. Families that return each year find that they can rekindle friendships made on the shores of Lake Sebago and be continually amazed at the selection of activities that appeal to all members of the family, even as they grow and evolve.
