How to Create Custom Sanding Blocks

    • 1). Cut a 3-inch section off the wood with the miter saw. Hold it in one hand by the edge and round the corners off the other edge on a stationary sander. Round the corners so that you have an oval shape.

    • 2). Peel the paper from the back of the abrasive disc. Place the oval side of the block down on the sticky part of the sandpaper and pull up on both side to stick the sandpaper around the curve. Use the round edge of the block to sand inside narrow spaces.

    • 3). Cut a 2-inch section of wood with the miter saw. Use the stationary sander to taper one side down to 1/4-inch. Peel the back off the disc and stick it to the 1/4-inch side letting the sides of the sandpaper overlap up both edges and stick to the sides of the block. Use this thin edge to sand inside the edges of moldings and tight cracks.

    • 4). Cut two pieces of wood at 3 inches with the miter saw. Round three edges of one block using the abrasive sander. Round the top two corners completely off. Run a bead of glue along the square edge of the block. Center it down the middle of the other block squishing the glue edge down hard. Flip it over and shoot pin nails through the bottom block into the rounded off to attach it permanently.

    • 5). Peel the back of a disc. Lay it down flat sticky side up and place the square block on the pad, push down to stick the sandpaper to the bottom block. Fold the sides up and over the edges of the block and stick them down. Use the rounded off block for a handle.
