- Symptoms of foot neuropathy are pain, weakness, tingling and numbness in more advanced stages.
- Foot neuropathy affects how sores heal. When numbness is present, sores may go unnoticed and become infected.
- According to the Mayo Clinic, 50 percent of diabetics will develop neuropathy within 10 to 20 years.
- Foot neuropathy can happen to any diabetic, but smoking, high cholesterol, consistently elevated blood sugar, age, male gender and length of time having diabetes increases the risk.
- Neuropathy may be diagnosed with a filament test, an electromyography or nerve-conduction studies. If diabetic neuropathy is diagnosed, feet should be visually examined daily. Pain medication may be administered when necessary.
