Diabetes Feet Pain

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of foot neuropathy are pain, weakness, tingling and numbness in more advanced stages.

    Effects

    • Foot neuropathy affects how sores heal. When numbness is present, sores may go unnoticed and become infected.

    Statistic

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, 50 percent of diabetics will develop neuropathy within 10 to 20 years.

    Factors

    • Foot neuropathy can happen to any diabetic, but smoking, high cholesterol, consistently elevated blood sugar, age, male gender and length of time having diabetes increases the risk.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Neuropathy may be diagnosed with a filament test, an electromyography or nerve-conduction studies. If diabetic neuropathy is diagnosed, feet should be visually examined daily. Pain medication may be administered when necessary.
