There are millions of men and women who suffer from hair loss in this country and around the world.
You can tell the number must be large by the amount of scam products, treatments and procedures that are sold to the tune of billions of dollars.
These range from a home remedy supposedly found on the wall of an Egyptian tomb to a device that is supposed to grow hair with a few little colored light bulbs.
It is no wonder so many people have just thrown in the towel and shaved off what little hair they had left.
But if you aren't ready to go with the commando look on your head there are a few options that can help you to get hair back on that bald spot.
The FDA has approved two drugs, Finasteride and Minoxidil which can help with hair loss.
The problem with these is two fold.
First, they don't give anywhere near 100% hair re-growth.
At best they stop some percentage of hair from falling out and thicken the remaining hair a little.
Second, to continue to be effective, both of these drugs need to be taken on an ongoing basis or the positive results will quickly vanish.
If you are looking for a restoration procedure that will give very good hair coverage and will last for years you need to look at hair transplantation.
This is a relatively simple surgical procedure that can be performed in a doctor's office or clinic on an out patient basis.
With men the cosmetic surgeon will remove hair follicle units from the back of the head because there is almost always good hair growth there even if the top of the head is bald.
A strip of scalp is removed and the resulting incision sewn up.
The individual hair units are then removed from this strip of skin and inserted into the bald area.
Within a few weeks the follicles will attach to the surrounding blood supply and start to manufacture hair shaft material.
The process for women is a little different since they usually have hair thinning problems along with bald patches.
In this case the follicular unit extraction method is used.
With this process the individual hairs are removed directly from the skin without incising it from the body.
These hair units are then inserted into the bald area like in men.
This method works well because the hair can be harvested from several areas of the head and also other parts of the body which gives a much larger potential harvest area.
