When it comes to playing basketball, there are two major players that everyone wants to be. Either a person wants to be the free wheeling three-point shooter that can throw down big shots from downtown or they want to be the guy that can drive the lane and drop the facial with a huge dunk. If you have ever wanted to learn how to dunk and aren't sure where to start, it's a matter of knowing what to do, how to train and eventually getting to the rim with relative ease. Remember, you will not dunk on day one if you don't already have a high vertical, which means that you'll have to start at square one, but that doesn't mean that you can't do it; it's just a matter of following some simple steps. Consider the following as a stepping-stone to getting the best out of your game.
Step 1 - Work on your Vertical
The first thing that you need to do is start working on your vertical leap. This involves training on a daily or at least every other day on your legs, and jumping. Isolate the hamstrings and quadriceps, focusing on stretching and elongating the muscle for maximum elasticity for your vertical leap. On your off days from cardio vascular workouts, utilize weights that will help position your upper body and lower body in a symmetrical manner, and in time you will start to see increases in your leap, which is crucial to getting to the rim.
Step 2 - Practice Forward Jumping
This is different than the above in that you're working on your movement forward. Jumping forward is crucial because in your leap upwards to the rim, will require movement with a forward momentum that will get you slamming. Not every dunk is straight up and down, which is why you need to practice your lunge forward.
Step 3 - Test your Skills
After some time, you will start to see your skills improve and the last step to get to the dunks is to test your skills. Find an empty gym, and utilize it to jump and dunk. If you aren't reaching the rim quite yet, try to jump with the focus on the backboard. Inch your way up and continue to use this as a measuring point until you can reach the rim and beyond.
The above 3 steps are meant to be a quick guide towards learning how to dunk the easy way. The method is easy, but the process will take you some time. With some hard work, you will dunk in no time.
