When a regular driver drill is too heavy or bulky for a job that requires more precision, there are several options available. A variety of instruments such as rotary tools, push drills, and high-speed air carving tools can provide more accuracy for jobs that require greater attention to detail. - Rotary tools are similar to a drill, but are smaller and have a straight rather than pistol-style shape. Rotary tools have interchangeable bits with a wide variety of bit options available for drilling. In addition to drilling, rotary tools can be used for cutting, sanding, and polishing. Types of drill bits include precision twist drill bits, glass drill bits and brad point drill bits.
- A push drill is a non-electric, hand-operated tool often used by jewelers to drill soft metals such as aluminum, copper, brass, bronze and tin. They are small, pen-like devices that work like a punch. To make a hole with a push drill, the site for the hole is first indented by placing the tip of the tool against the surface and hitting the other end with a hammer. A drill bit is then inserted into the tool for finishing the hole.
- Precision high-speed carving tools are powered by compressed air. You will need compressed air supply such as an electric, portable compressed air tank to operate this tool. It is a small instrument that is held like a pencil. At the end of the tool is a tiny drill bit-like tip known as a bur. A wide variety of bur styles are available. This tool is commonly used for cutting through and carving decorative eggshells. It can also be used to carve and engrave metal, wood, gemstones, antlers and a variety of additional materials.
