First Signs That an English Bulldog Is Pregnant

    Decreased Appetite

    • Early signs of English bulldog pregnancy can include a decreased appetite.Bulldog de profil image by Olivier from Fotolia.com

Some female English bulldogs, though admittedly not all, experience what is referred to in human terms as morning sickness, typically during the first few weeks of pregnancy. This can manifest itself in the form of a decreased appetite and/ or irregular eating habits. Vomiting may occur, though this is rare. A waning appetite, however, poses no grave concern for the welfare of the pups she may be carrying as the expectant mother will almost always make up for her waning appetite during the later stages of gestation. Typical gestation lasts 63 days.

    Abnormal Behavior

She loves you, she loves you not. Though this might sound strange, a pregnant English bulldog may display distinct behavioral changes immediately following conception, such as craving attention and affection. Such dependency is usually typical during the first few weeks of pregnancy, though some expectant bitches do just the opposite and become increasingly more distant, preferring to be left alone. If the male dog is in the female's immediate vicinity, he will likely feel the brunt of her rejection, particularly if he attempts to mate her again.

    Nipple Growth

    • Nipple changes are one of the first, unmistakable signs of a pregnant bulldog. The nipple area of an unbred female is generally small and flanked by flat skin. By the third or fourth week of gestation, the nipple of an expectant bitch should show signs of growth as they begin readying for eventual milk production. The breast material that surrounds the nipple will also appear swollen and enlarged as opposed to flat. The nipple may alter in color slightly and display more pink or reddish tones.
