The province of Phichit is located some 340 kilometers north of Bangkok, the capital of Thailand.
The town of Phichit is the provincial capital and it was established in 1056.
The town was an important aspect of the Sukhthai kingdom and played a big role in the ancient history of Thailand.
Today, very few visitors go there because they are unaware of the historical importance of the town.
The town is a major crop and fruit producer with rice, corn, green peas, pomelo, mango and jackfruit.
The province of Phitchit is lush and the soil is extremely fertile due to the presence of two rivers, namely Nan and Yom Rivers which flow into Chao Phraya River.
When visiting Phitchit town, a must see place is Utthayan Mueang Kao Pichit, which is 7 kilometers from the town on Phichit Wang Chik Road.
Utthayan Mueang Kao Pichit is a park which houses an ancient town which is believed to be more than 900 years old.
Archaeologists have discovered structures which are believed to have been built during the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods.
There are even moats and walls surrounding the city.
It is believed that during the Sukhothai period, Utthayan Mueang Kao Pichit was known as Muang Sa Luang and it was located on the then bank of Nan River, which has changed its course over the centuries.
However, somewhere in 1881, during the reign of King Rama V, the town was relocated to the new banks of Nan River.
Right in the center of the ancient town is Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat.
This temple has a huge bell-shaped chedi and once inside you can see hundreds of votive tablets.
Unfortunately, not much of the vihan is remaining but you can still see remnants of the vihan in front of the chedi.
Right around Utthayan Mueang Kao Pichit, there are many small chedis can be seen.
