Golf is hard.
You have to swing the club head 15 feet or more and return it to the exact spot it started from.
Not to mention that it must be on the correct path when it gets back to the ball.
Putting, on the other hand, requires you to move the club head as little as 6 inches, and return it to the ball on the path you took it away on.
Putting is easy.
It really amazes me how people like Stan Utley can recommend that you open the putter face on the way back and close it back to where it was on the way back to the ball.
Why complicate such an easy thing like short putting? Even when somebody has nothing to do all day but practice putting the best they can hope for is a little bit of inconsistency that will usually show up at just the wrong time.
Look at Sergio Garcia for a good example.
Many well meaning pros will tell you to do this or that with the putter.
Some say to keep the putter on line and the face square, while others prefer the Utley method.
The one thing they all have in common is that they totally miss the point of the game they are playing.
Anyone who tells you that the putter face must open on the backstroke and then reverse the action the way back to the ball is an idiot.
Anyone who tell you the putter must stay on the line and remain square is equally dumb.
Putting is about hitting a target at a certain speed.
That requires only the natural targeting skills we are all born with.
Any thoughts of what the putter is doing will only ensure that your attention is focused on the wrong thing.
If you want to putt your best.
Forget what the so-called experts are telling you about the putting stroke.
If you let your bodies natural targeting instincts work for you, everything else will fall into place and you will start making some putts.
