Reasons for Bilateral Ankle Edema

    Mild Cases

    • Mild cases of bilateral ankle edema can be caused by old age, a diet that consists of too much salt, sitting or staying in one position for an extended period of time, pregnancy, or the menstrual cycle.

    Side Effects

    • Bilateral ankle edema can also be caused by certain medications. Drugs known as vasodilators, or drugs that dilate the blood vessels, anti-inflammatory medications, and drugs that contain estrogen can all cause ankle edema.

    Other Causes

    • Bilateral ankle edema can also be a result of being overweight, a leg infection, varicose veins, or an injury or trauma to the leg. Insect bites or malnutrition can also be the underlying cause behind bilateral ankle edema.

    Serious Conditions

    • Bilateral ankle edema may also be one of the symptoms of a much more serious condition. These conditions include congestive heart failure, kidney disease, cirrhosis, vein damage, or lymphatic obstruction.

    Prevention/Solution

    • To avoid bilateral ankle edema, don't sit or stand the same place for too long. You may also want to cut back on salt in your diet and avoid tight clothing.
