The care and maintenance of a litter box can be a trying task even if you only have one cat.
Having two or more cats can require more consistent upkeep.
First, kitty litter can be expensive if you add up the recurring costs.
To minimize this cost, use clumping litter.
With some clumping litter and a slotted scooper, you can scoop up the clumped feces and urine while shaking away the litter that is still good for use.
This way, you don't have to throw away the entire pan of litter every time you clean the box.
Cats can be very territorial, especially if your cats have not grown up together.
If space allows, have at least one litter box per cat, with one additional box overall.
Cats will then feel safe using the litter box, knowing that there will always be at least one litter box available for their use.
The benefit for you, the owner, is that the smell of kitty litter will not be concentrated in one area of your living space.
The last tip is to clean your litter box as often as you can-if you're able, try to clean it even once a day! Cats may become agitated when trying to cover up their mess if there is not enough clean litter to use.
This is especially important if one or more of your cats is declawed.
The declawing surgery makes the tips of cats' paws very sensitive, especially to substances like litter.
If there are too many clumps in the litter, your declawed cat may be too afraid to use the box you've provided and instead go somewhere else in your house.
If you follow these easy tips, keeping your house clean and free of that "litter-box" smell will be a snap!
