The 2009 USA Swimming National Youth World Cup Team took home one silver medal and two bronze medals on the first day of competition at the FINA World Cup in Stockholm. Melissa Franklin earned the silver, while Amber McDermott and Kyle Whitaker both won bronze medals. Michael Phelps, competing in Stockholm as a National Team representative to the Youth Team, also took home a bronze medal.
Franklin, who competed in two finals Tuesday, won the silver medal in the women's 200m IM with a time of 2:07.16.
She finished fourth in the 200m back in 2:06.07. Madison White (Danville, Calif.) also competed in the 200m back and finished seventh in 2:07.28.
Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind.) picked up the bronze in the men's 400m IM with a time of 4:08.15. "I did better than I expected," Whitaker said following his race. "It was a good race and all of the competitors were really fast. It's great for me to come to a final like this and be able to swim with them. It's great experience."
Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md.), swimming in his only final of the night, earned a bronze medal in the men's 100m IM. Phelps was in fourth place after the first 50 meters, but had a strong breaststroke and freestyle leg to finish second in 52.14. Adam Mania was sixth in 52.70.
The women's 800m free field featured three members of the Youth World Cup Team - McDermott, Megan Rankin (Irvine, Calif.), and Camille Adams (Cypress, Texas). McDermott earned the bronze with a time of 8:24.83. Rankin was sixth in 8:31.69 and Adams was seventh in 8:35.37.
National Teamer Peter Marshall (Atlanta, Ga.) won a gold medal and set a World Cup record in the men's 100m back. Marshall led throughout the race to finish in 49.29 while Adam Mania (Hickman, Neb.) placed sixth in 50.60. On the women's side, Jessica Hardy (Long Beach, Calif.) placed fourth in the women's 50m free in 23.96 and Elizabeth Pelton (Baltimore, Md.) was eighth in the 200m back in 2:07.91.
The FINA World Cup event in Stockholm, Sweden will conclude on Wednesday, November 11 2009.
